研究概要

まず、STEP課題1に関連して、STEP期間にわが国が打ち上げたYohkoh衛星の成果を平成8年4月にアルゼンチン・ブェノスアイレスにて開催されたCOLAGE会議において、小杉健郎教授が総括的に報告した。課題2については、木星磁気圏と太陽風の相互作用に関連し、オーストラリア・タスマニア大学のグループ及び、米国のフロリダ大学のグループと検討を行った。特に、1994年SL-9彗星塵が木星磁気圏を通過した際の特別な状況は、STEP期間に生まれて新しい現象として究明が急がれ、この件について、集中的な検討が行われた。このため、さらにフランス・リ-ルで開催されたURSIにおいても、8月に大家寛教授をURSI総会に派遣してSTEP課題2:木星電波研究に関する研究会を開催し、特に1994年SL-9彗星木星衝突に伴う諸現象に関して研究発表並びに研究打ち合わせを行った。また本研究に関連し、SCOSTEPにおける国際STEP専門委員会において、我が国のSTEP成果が報告された。特にあけぼの衛星観測によれば、磁気嵐回復相のプラズマ圏構造は、これまでの磁気圏対流理論による考えでは解釈不可能な、特異なプラズマ密度分布を呈していることが注目された。この事実は、研究者間の国際的な興味の対象となり、今後、国際協同研究の課題としてこの問題に取り組む体制を作られることとなった。
このように本年度における研究成果の公表並びに研究打ち合わせを通じて、特に木星電波観測研究に関する米国、オーストラリア、フランス並びに中国研究者との情報交換が飛躍的に進展した。
