低電力超高速マイクロプロセッサのアーキテクチャに関する研究

研究概要

平成14年度においては、低電力超高速マイクロプロセッサの設計概念を確立する上で、低電力超高速の持つ意味を今一度見直してみた。低電力で超高速という語は一見矛盾するようであるが、実はアーキテクチャを改善することにより、これらの語は矛盾を超越して互いに存在し得るものである方向に進んでいる。
まず、低電力ということは、チップ上での単位時間の消費電力が低いということを意味し、いわば能率の良い論理スイッチ動作の毎秒の回数が、少ない方向に最適化されることである。また、チップ上でのこの論理スイッチ動作が一定であっても、シリコン上で耐熱温度以下の温度を保つ意味でも、コストを反映するチップ面積にある程度のゆとりを許せば、この問題は解決する。以上のことから、合理的に理想化に向けた無駄の無いハードウェア論理スイッチ動作を狙い、かつチップの熱密度を抑えたマイクロプロセッサが低電力超高速であることを理論的に証明した。そしてその理論に沿ったアーキテクチャを考案した。その大分類としては、まず、トランジスタ密度が極めて高いチップ上において、各論理スイッチ動作による電力を抑え、かつチップ上の時空間での動作を巧みにパイプライン化したアーキテクチャの開発を行った。一方、極力並列化の演算を試みることにより、発熱によるチップ上の熱密度を抑える方式のアーキテクチャの開発を行った。これらの成果を得る過程で、米国スタンフォード大学で平成14年8月と10月の2回、研究打ち合わせと中間報告を行った。また、平成15年3月に平成14年度分の研究成果を米国スタンフォード大学で発表した。併せて、国内でも4回、研究分担者で集まり研究成果の中間発表会を行ってきた。これらの成果はまた、査読静文22件、基調講演1件、招待講演4件、著書4編により発表された。
