研究実績の概要 |
This project is to conduct research on how female characters were represented in eighteenth-century joruri puppet theater through textual and visual examination of contemporary joruri-related publications. My ongoing project is to consider the role of joruri as a theatrical form that reflects yet resists contemporary social codes, while functioning as popular entertainment. After one year of research suspension in 2020-2021, I resumed my research in April 2021. Because of pandemic-related travel restrictions, I mostly focused on online research and revisiting my preliminary idea that I presented at the conference back in 2019. I revised the content and published an article "Transmitting Myth and Magic: Early Modern Adaptations of the Dojoji Legend in Joruri Puppet Plays" on joruri adaptations of Dojoji plays in English. I'm also looking into various adaptations of Oshichi stories and the interplay of various genres, including theater and popular fiction. I am currently revising the paper for publication in an international journal.

理由
On-site research continued to be difficult due to pandemic-related travel restrictions and personal health issues. I had to focus on online research and revisiting my previous ideas.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
I plan to submit my paper on Oshichi to an international journal this summer. Regardless of whether it will be accepted for publication, the feedback I can get would be very helpful for my research. Also, as the travel restrictions loosen, I would like to incorporate more on-site archival research starting this year, especially in Osaka. In August, I plan to apply to present in the Association for Asian Studies conference next year. Since this project has been going slower due to personal and pandemic-related reasons, I will take extra year to conduct my research.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
On-site research continued to be difficult due to pandemic-related travel restrictions and personal health issues. I used funds to purchase research books and visual materials in fiscal year 2021.
