Assessment of a new nursing English curriculum focusing on intercultural competence

研究実績の概要

This study aims at investigating the impact of nursing courses that target international competence as well as cultural attitudes. For the first phase of the project, I aimed to building an assessment tool for the new courses. That tool focused students' perception of their own attitudes changes and progress towards the mastery of the rules of academic writing in English.
After creating a draft survey in English, the questionnaire was submitted to faculty members in charge of intercultural nursing at the University of Alabama and the University of Cincinnati in the USA. at the same time, the English draft was professionally translated in Japanese before being submitted to a panel of Japanese nursing faculty members. The translated draft was tested as a pilot run at the end of seven courses offered to both undergraduate and graduate students. However, due to the impact of COVID-19 on the attendance of these elective language classes, the survey could only be completed by 55 students. Preliminary findings indicate that students' performance and attitudes changed throughout the duration of the six courses. The courses consistently and significantly led to an increase in openness, self-awareness, and adaptability to different sets of rules and conventions for academic communication.

理由

Due to the spread of COVID-19, all courses have been recommended to move online for FY2020. This transition has negatively affected the attendance of elective language classes that are the object of this study (reduction by 80%) and has slowed down the process of data collection.
For students, a perk of the language courses is the opportunity to use English in face-to-face interactions. However, the transition to online classes, even through live discussion, led to lower motivation and a focus moved towards mandatory classes. Ultimately, students have been less inclined to participate in classes or in the survey. As a result, the number of participants engaged in the study was only 55 for FY2020 instead of the expected number of 120-180.

今後の研究の推進方策

Upon receiving final comments from the experts, we will complete the final version of the survey questionnaire and implement it between 2021/4/1 and 2022/3/31. Starting from FY2021 a new course has been added to the English curriculum of undergraduate students: the collaborative online international learning courses with the University of Alabama and the University of Cincinnati. This will allow to collect additional data from ten more students this year.
In the phase 2 of the project, we plan on implementing the survey in all undergraduate and graduate courses of the new English language curriculum. Despite the continuation of the pandemic crisis, we expect to collect data from more than 30 students enrolled in the elective classes.
In the phase 3 of the project, we are planning to compile the collected data and focus on the dissemination of our findings. We have already submitted an article regarding our curriculum design and accepted for publication in the Japan Association of Nursing English Teachers: Nursing English Nexus.

次年度使用額が生じた理由

We are planning to invite the expert panelists from America to Japan to provide improvements on the survey. This spending was scheduled for 2020.4.1 ~ 2021.3.31 but the pandemic prevented the researchers to travel. As a result, we would like to transfer the funds allocated for inviting the expert panelists for the upcoming year (300000 yen).
