研究実績の概要 |
This year was again affected by international travel restrictions and a large focus was placed on analyzing and publishing the Okinawan data. This resulted in the first two publications of the project. The first “Overview of the mesophotic coral ecosystems around Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan” reports on the composition of the coral communities at depths between 30 and 100 m around Sesoko Island. The second “Deepest observation of the butterflyfish Coradion altivelis (Perciformes: Chaetodontidae) in Japan” contributes to ameliorate baseline knowledge on depth distribution of marine organisms in the mesophotic zone as this information is crucial for further meta-analyses and the current state of the information published is a major source or error in analyses and interpretation regarding the vertical distribution of marine organisms and the potential ecological role of mesophotic ecosystems. In addition, numerous voucher specimens were collected at depths ranging from 30 to 80 m to support photoquadrats analyses of Okinawan data. In the Philippines and Indonesia, additional quadrats data could be obtained in the mesophotic zone and a new location could be explored by local collaborators.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
While the fieldwork initially planned keeps being delayed by covid restrictions, close collaborations with local researchers allowed to obtain the basic information needed for this project.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
This last year of the project, I aim to obtain additional data from Okinawa, the Philippines and Indonesia. However, a large part of the effort will be focusing on integrating all the data obtained and perform meaningful comparisons of mesophotic communities across latitudes and translate the findings into manuscripts. The results of this project will be presented at 3 international conferences in Europe and the USA on corals, ecology and specific to mesophotic coral ecosystems. A publicly available database of molecular data of cnidarians from the deep parts of the reefs around Sesoko will also be built.

次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
This year again, covid restrictions prevented international travels for both fieldwork and conferences. However, this year (2022) as international travels are becoming more feasible, I expect to achieve the fieldwork and present the results at international conference.
