| 研究実績の概要 |
During the Fiscal Year 2014 we have made good progress in the project.
Using the empirical results from Phase 1 of the project, I started Phase 2 and in FY2012 published a paper at the Journal of the Japanese and International Economies, and in FY2013 published 2 other papers related to the project. The first, “On the role of policy interventions in structural change and economic development: The case of postwar Japan” joint with Yasuyuki Sawada, was published at the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control. The second, ” Life-Cycle Labor Search with Stochastic Match Quality” joint with Junichi Fujimoto, was published at the International Economic Review. Both studies analyze the effects of several government policies on the labor market of both Japan and the U.S. In FY2014 I published at the European Economic Review the paper “The Labor Market Effects of Introducing Unemployment Benefits in an Economy with High Informality”, joint with Mariano Bosch, where we show what types of policies are more effective in labor markets with high informality. Another paper that is under review “Labor Market Policies in a Dual Economy” joint with Sagiri Kitao.
I am currently finalizing a paper with Xiangcai Meng and Ryuichi Tanaka entitled “Government Expenditure Increase and Labor Market Dynamics in Japan’s Lost Decade” in which we explicitly explore the role of certain policies of the Japanese government in the increase of unemployment over the 1990s. This paper should be finalized and sent out for publication soon.

理由
The project is progressing as expected, with the empirical phase finished as well as a couple of papers related to the theoretical and simulation phase.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
During FY2015, the last year of the grant, I will finalize all the papers in the theoretical part of the project. The currently open papers build models to test the role of the different government policies. The empirical analysis performed prior to this stage, have been essential to determine the types of features that we have included in the models of the papers, as well as the policies that we are studying.
During this fiscal year we will present the open papers in several conferences as well as in seminars to get final feedback before we send them for publication.

| 次年度使用額が生じた理由 |
Part of the requested budget went unused because I will need it more this year to finance conference trips to present the papers, as well as payment for research assistantship and new hardware for final simulations.
