Research Abstract

This research was conducted to construct and characterize the self-assembled monolayrs with biologically related functionalities. The following results were obtained.
1. Microelectrodes suitabel for biosensor was designed and fabricated. The microelectrodes were characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM).
2. Electrochemical characteristics of cytochorome-c at gold electrodes modified with mixed monolayrs of promoter and barrier molecules were investigated. The compositions of the monolayrs were determined by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and electrochemical measurements.
3. Self-assembled process of promoter and barrier molecules was monitored by in situ scanning tunneling microscope (STM). In the case of barrier molecules, i.e., n-alkanethiols, the self-assembled monolayrs were formed through three stages, i.e., 1. liquid phase, 2. organized phase with stripe and mesh structures and 3. solid phase with close packed ROO<3>*ROO<3> structure.
4. Usefulness of novel techniques such as sum frequency generation (SFG) and surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD) was evaluated.
