Research Abstract |
The four regional cities of Sapporo, Sendai, Hiroshima and Fukuoka have rapidly grown up since the 1950s in Japan, in spite of the concentration of national population into the three largest metropolitan areas. In addition, the hierarchical connections between regional cities and other prefectural capitals have been strengthened through the agglomeration of branch offices of nation-wide companies. This was a phenomenon to characterize the urbanization of the latter of the 20th century in Japan. The development of high-speed transport links such as highways and airline routes enabled the visitor's increase. However, there is a large difference in the ability to invite more visitors among four regional cities. The ability to attract more visitors of Fukuoka is the largest among the four cities. As a background of that, Fukuoka has a relatively large volume of customers of Kyushu region, and a positional advantage in making linkages with other Asian countries. Less
