Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Materials prepared in the initial stages of the project have been selected based on their spectroscopic properties. Initially purified compounds were analyzed for their self-assembly properties. That is, the assembly in solution was studied by using electronic absorption and circular dichroism revealing unusual behaviour. Formation of thermotropic and lyotropic (in a solvent) liquid crystal phases was observed. The materials have been tested for alignment in liquid crystal polymers using NMR spectroscopy.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The first set of measurements on the alignment properties of the materials in NMR systems has just been completed (April '17) and is now being analyzed. Three compounds were selected from those available based on their purity and self-assembly properties. The compounds were then applied in solutions of a standard LC polymer. After the analysis, it will be decided whether further synthesis is required or to continue physical analyses with the present materials.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The plan is at a stage of analysis of the properties of the materials. Based on the outcome of that stage, the project will move to further synthesis and/or to attempted analyses of chiral analytes using the perylene diimide alignment media. The work already completed will move to publication stage. Several other results involving self-assembly properties of the materials may also be prepared for publication.
