Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the past year my work has progressed in accordance with the timeline presented in my application. The original plan was to investigate the association between coping strategies and cardiovascular disease and mortality. I have published two articles which show that the way with which individuals deal with stressors in daily life influences the risk of both cancer and cardiovascular mortality. The study results carry with them a social relevance thus garnering media attention and were reported by NHK news on March 5th, 2016, in addition to several publications in other news outlets.
Besides the ongoing research in Japan, my work in Sweden is progressing well. My collaboration with Lund University has resulted in one publication as co-author. This article highlights the strong association of an endogenous opioid neurohormone precursor for the risk of incident breast cancer. The neurohormone was associated with stress levels and may possibly reflect a link between neurobehavioural stress and decreased immune defence against breast tumour development.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Currently I have a total of four manuscripts under review as first author. Two of these are a result of my work in Japan whereas two manuscripts are a result of my collaborative work with Lund University in Sweden. I expect that all of these manuscripts will be published before the end of 2016.
Moreover, I have submitted abstracts to three international conferences for oral presentation and will receive notification of the status of these applications in the next two months. Two of these abstracts are related to my work in Japan and one abstract is related to my research activity in Sweden.
The only setback of my research plan (and the reason for giving a status of "1" above) is the unfortunate inability to conduct gene-environment interactions (gene-stress interactions) on the Japanese data. This is only due to the unavailability of data on genetic variants for the population in question. However, despite this situation, the relevant analyses are being conducted in Sweden and I expect the resulting manuscript to be published in the coming year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Over the next year of my grant, I expect to publish four manuscripts as first author and expect to present some of these results at international conferences.
Moreover, I will be required to return to Lund University on a number of occasions over the coming year in order to continue analyzing the data and to meet with important collaborators (including the principal investigator) which in turn will allow me to continue with my research activity as set out in the initial research proposal.
