Research Abstract |
Glycine betaine (betaine) is a important osmoprotectant which accumulates under abiotic stresses. In this projects, we have studied molecular mechanisms of synthesis, transport and accumulation of betaine in plantas and halotolerant cyanobacteria. In this project, we obtained the following results. 1) Genes for direct methylation of glycine provide high levels of glycinebetaine and abiotic-stress tolerance in Synechococcus and Arabidopsis. 2) Isolation and functional characterization of Ca^<2+>/H^+ antiporters from cyanobacteria. 3) Isolation and functional characterization of betaine transporters from halotolerant cyanobacterium and mangrove. 4) Cloning, functional expression and primary characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus K^+/H^+ antiporter Escherichia coli ChaA. 4) Halotolerant cyanobacterium Aphanothece halophytica contains a betaine transporter active at alkaline pH and high salinity. 5) Carboxyl-terminal hydrophilic tail of a NhaP type Na^+/H^+ antiporter from cyanobacteria is involved in the apparent affinity for Na^+ and pH sensitivity. 6) Root specific expression of Na^+/H^+ antiporter gene from Synechosystis sp. PCC6803 confers salt tolerance of tobacco plant.
