Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We developed a self-template strategy to prepare 2D MOFs network. 2D layered double-metal hydroxide (LDH) and other layered metal hydroxides are used not only as a 2D scaffold but also as a self-sacrificed metal source. After capturing the abundant metal cations identically from the 2D LDH by the organic linkers, 2D MOFs network is formed. It is interesting that the 2D MOFs network derived carbon materials retain the 2D morphology and exhibit a unique honeycomb-like macroporous opening structure due to the confined shrink of the polyhedral facets. The overall properties of 2D carbon network are adjustable according to the tailored metal compositions in 2D LDH, which are desirable for the electrochemical application in supercapacitors.

Reason

We carried out many additional experiments to support this project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

We plan to prepare 3D core-shell structured MOF@nanosheets or nanosheets@MOF precursors. After further carbonization, core-shell structured carbon-based nanomaterials will be prepared and display synergy behaviors in electrochemical applications. As a proof of concept, single layered or few-layered 2D MoS2 nanosheets, which have similar lateral size compared with traditional 3D MOF polyhedrons will be used to functionalize 3D MOFs. After one-step carbonization under N2 atmospheres, MoS2 nanosheets functionalized MOF-derived carbon can be obtained. A synergistic effect would be observed in the product: (1) carbon shells can provide a good electrical conductivity and prevent the aggregation of MoS2 nanosheets, (2) MoS2 could provide abundant active sites for electrochemical applications.
