Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The II BKAS workshop on book advertising was held at Waseda University, under the title, ‘Literary Advertising: Periodicals, Magazines, and Newspapers in the Japanese and Anglophone World’ on the 5 April, 2018. Six papers were given featuring six papers. Two of the papers were published as BKAS Essay shorts, most recently ‘Manufacturing the Market: Selling the Over-Seas Daily Mail, 1904-1919…’ by Prof. Aiko Watanabe, Waseda University. Two other papers are expected to be produced by participants this year. inclusion on the site this year. Professor David Finkelstein also gave a special lecture at Japan Women’s University on the 9 April 2019, ‘Blackwoods & Its Edinburgh Monthly Magazine’. On the 6 April there was a visit to the Toppan Printing Museum. Personally, I completed a case study on newspaper ‘Advertising’ for Edinburgh University Press’, landmark three volume book series, The History of the English and Irish Press (EUP: forthcoming, January 2020). In November 2018, I had a series of meetings and discussions with Visiting Scholar (Waseda University), Prof. Keith Hanley, Lancaster University, regarding advice on conference planning, and the project’s development.
Preparation work for the construction of a database of book advertising was also undertaken, with key source materials identified. Upon advice and discussion with DH and DF, the database will initially focus on book adverting of Japanese and Chinese-related books by indigenous and foreign presses (c1880-1945), and imported foreign books into Japan by companies such as Maruzen and Yushodo.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Construction of the database of book advertising images: Despite the initial scope of the database now being decided, and the majority of sources identified, accessible, and ready to scan, actual scanning work has not yet commenced. This is because (i) further work identifying the most cost-effective, and conservation-friendly equipment has been necessary (ii) a research assistant, who had been arranged to conduct the scanning work and undertake secretarial assistance for the conference planning had to withdraw from the arrangement owing to unforeseen circumstances. BKAS Essay shorts: It has taken longer than anticipated for contributors to the workshop to produce ready copy for the BKAS Essays Shorts. Conference planning: (i) The general scope of this key dissemination, its aims, and the key logistical decisions have been made. At the end of May, a call for papers will go out, invitations to identified plenary speakers will also be made. The BKAS Website will be the main platform used for conference information for participants. An approach has to publishers to participate in the conference will ensure an important industry perspective on advertising in their industry. A prospective Workshop hosted by the Institute of English Studies is presently in abeyance, but may take place in September 2019.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Future plans include:
(i) Launch of publicly accessible database of advertising images (c.June 2019); (ii) Co-curation of a digital exhibition as part of the Competing Imperialisms in North East Asia Network (CIRN), of which the grantee is a member. This will have a strong component on typography and book advertising. Its aim is to have a public outreach effect; (iii) Host an International Conference (March 2020) at Japan Women's University on Book Advertising; (iv) Continue construction of a working bibliography of scholarly work on book advertising; (v) A peer-reviewed survey article comparing Japanese book advertising with British/US book advertising.
