Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I have published two BKAS Essay Shorts (see publications), and edited a BKAS Essay Short by Prof. David Finkelstein on Japanese publisher-postcards as advertising artefacts. Restrictions on research activities due to COVID-19 during the reporting period, especially restrictions on travel abroad (and re-entry to Japan), as well as on close-proximity working, has resulted in little other progress towards the two main outcomes of the project (an international conference, and a database of advertising images). Identification of material for scanning has continued, and the set-up remains primed with two assistants identified and ready to commence work as soon as circumstances allow.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

From a logistical viewpoint, restrictions on travel and workflow disruptions have made staging a face-to-face international conference impossible. Planning for virtual webinars and a program of small e-events is underway to commence in September.

I am currently working on a chapter on ‘Press Advertising’ for Edinburgh University Press's prestigious, 'History of the English and Irish Press', which is on schedule.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The BKAS website is to be utilised more fully as a point of research dissemination, hosting a series of on-demand lectures and associated webinars. Commencing in September, they supplement the BKAS Essay Shorts, which will be promoted more widely, and a gallery of book advertising images. This triptych will, increase awareness of and interest in the importance and uniqueness of book advertising, but also spark future collaborations.

Planning work and early-stage research work has already been undertaken in collaboration with Prof. David Finkelstein on the Japanese publisher Hokuseido within the framework of Westernisation and Imperial discourse. This is an exciting development for which publication data for the entire period has been gathered for the first time.

Causes of Carryover

The balance has been carried over because of cancellation/postponement of the two key research outcomes as noted above.

The bulk of the carried-over money will be used for execution of the webinars and costs associated with recorded videos, employment of assistants for the scanning and digitisation work. An additional overseas research trip to the UK to visit the British Library and Special Collections of London University (which was not possible this year) is also planned, subject to international travel restrictions.
