Outline of Final Research Achievements

We published a book, "Women Giving Birth and Raising Children: Family Building through Sperm Donation," as a compilation of academic findings never before seen in Japan as a research study of family formation and child-rearing practices by sexual minorities using assisted reproductive technology. The book adds theoretical discussions based on international research findings and is an important achievement in family sociology, feminist theory, and gender theory. The table of contents is as follows.
Introduction: Same-sex couples bearing and raising children, and their respective families: From the research in Japan, II Findings and Suggestions from Abroad [Catholic countries] France, Italy, Ireland [East Asia] Taiwan, Korea, III Considering child-rearing by women alone: Possibilities of "family" suggested by these women, IV [Theory V. In summary: Suggestions for the development of the necessary systems in the future.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

同性婚はもとより、同性カップルの生殖補助医療が認められておらず、当該家族に対する社会の許容度もきわめて低い日本では、同性カップルが子をもうけるということ自体が、金銭的にも社会資源の面でも容易ではない。それにもかかわらず子をもうけたカップルが直面した・している困難と、その際に取った戦略、そして他国においてはどのように問題が解決されているかに関する事例を収集し分析検討することによって、当該家族のもとで育つ子の法的権利・福祉のあり方を改善するための基礎となる情報資料をまとめることができた。
