Outline of Final Research Achievements

World expositions are long-term events in which many countries and companies participate, and different traditional cultures and cutting-edge technologies converge under one roof. This study examines the findings on two previous world expositions's studies, for which Kuresawa was the principal investigator, to analyze exhibition plans for multiple world expositions in Japan, starting with the Osaka Expo in 1970, and exhibitions of Japanese pavilions at international expositions. Simultaneously, we consider international comparisons by investigating approaches by art studies, sociology, and media theory and Japan’s representation in various forms. This plan succeeded in achieving certain results.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

過去2回の万博研究では、万博を主に芸術学の観点から検討し、1970年の大阪万博において前衛芸術が果たした役割や、実現の機会を逸した紀元二千六百年万博における芸術展示の計画について、現地調査や文献調査を通じて、ある程度解明することに成功した。その成果を踏まえて企画された本研究では、芸術学に加えて社会学やメディア論の観点を新たに導入し、1970年の大阪万博を中心に、過去に開催された万博における「日本」という表象を新たにとらえ返すことに一定の成果を収めることができた。
