Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、経年から数十年規模の熱帯大西洋-太平洋間相互作用の要因とそれらの気候影響の解明を目指している。2021年度は、SINTEX-F モデルを用いた数値実験により、熱帯大西洋と熱帯太平洋の海盆間相互作用を調べた。その結果、熱帯大西洋の影響は太平洋のエルニーニョ/ラニーニャ現象を励起させるほど強くはないものの、進行中のエルニーニョ/ラニーニャ現象を変調させる程度の影響力を持つことが分かった (J. Climate に論文掲載)。また、2019年後半に発生した大西洋ニーニョ現象の要因を調べた研究では、熱帯大西洋北部の風応力強制が赤道東部大西洋へ伝播する暖かい海洋波動を励起し、過去40年で最大となる大西洋ニーニョ現象を発生させたことを突き止めた。さらに、この極端現象は太平洋やインド洋からの影響ではなく、大西洋の内部変動として発生した可能性が高いことも示した。本成果は、GRL に論文が掲載され、メディア向けにプレスリリースも行った。また、Linear inverse model を用いた海盆間相互作用に関する国際共同研究も Climate Dynamics で査読中である。
さらに、現在も進行中の研究としては、大気海洋結合モデルCM2.1の長期シミュレーションからENSOと熱帯大西洋海面水温偏差が共発達する事例を抽出し、熱帯大西洋及び太平洋の海面水温をそれぞれ気候値に緩和するアンサンブル実験を実施し、その解析を進めている。この関連研究として、CM2.1を用いた熱帯太平洋ペースメーカー実験を実施し、今世紀初めの地球温暖化の停滞に続く2010年代中頃の急激な地球温暖化が放射強制力と熱帯太平洋海面水温変動の影響で説明できることを示し、さらに大気大循環モデルによる感度実験により、熱帯太平洋変動が他海域に遠隔に形成する海面水温変動の役割を定量化した。
