| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We put legal experts and lay persons into fMRI and have them make decisions on both sentencing decisions and daily matter decisions. The brain-scanned date analysis yield; (A) during the legal decision-makings, both emotion-related brain areas and cognitive/reason-related brain areas are activated. Thus, legal mind is not either rational or emotional, but a mixture of them. (B) During the sentencing decisions for good defendants with remorse, activated brain areas of legal expert are much simpler than those of lay people. Thus, legal expertise means efficient use of brain on legal decision-making. (c) While making sentencing decisions for bad defendants without remorse, we find the direction of connectivity from cognitive/reason-brain area toward emotion-brain area among legal experts, while the direction of the connectivity among lay people are reversed. Thus, legal experts are controling emotion by reason while lay people are controling reason by emotion.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
リーガル・マインドを持つ法専門家の法的判断は古くから議論され，理性中心との主張の方が多数派であったが，それが正確ではなく，法的判断も理性と感情の双方からなる複合的判断であることを脳科学的に明らかにして，従来の議論に科学的解明を与えたことは法学上画期的である．認知・理性関連脳部位と感情関連脳部位の間の連結性の方向が，反省悔悟のない悪い被告人の量刑を加重する際に，法の素人は感情部位から認知・理性部位へと向かう連結性が生じるのに対し，法専門家は逆方向で認知・理性が感情をコントロールしているとの知見は，脳科学的に画期的である．
成果は法学教育，法曹養成，法実務に大きな影響を与えうるものである．
