Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We conducted several experiments on optical properties of eggshell in Terahertz Region (0.5-3.0 THz) to interpret biological phenomena of chicken eggshell and also conducted experiment on Hatching eggs toward predicting gender and hatching time based on eggshell optical properties. We found differences in image textural differences in SEM image, and in refractive index of eggshell from younger (refractive index = 2.45) and older (RI=2.65) parent flocks. The refractive index in terahertz region indicates the density of eggshell. Now, we could trace back mother birds` age based on eggshell characteristics. Based on the above observation, it is important to develop non-destructive protocol of refractive index measurement of eggs for industrial application. And we successfully developed a non-destructive protocol with correlation co-efficient (r=0.7).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have observed and discovered many new biological phenomena in chicken eggshell and abled to develop protocol and interpret those biological phenomena using Terahertz signal of eggshell for the first time. For example, the biological age differences of eggshell can be traced using refractive index of eggshell in THz region (0.5-3.0 THz). And we developed a non-destructive refractive index estimation protocol for intact eggshell. We belief this protocol could extensively be used for precision poultry and egg industry in the future. Because refractive index of eggshell is not only important to interpret the biology but also have industrial significance for egg industry as it indicates the density and strength of the eggshell. Additionally, we would like to mention here that we published several research papers in this fiscal years in reputed journals and attended conferences like ASABE and SPIE.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In next fiscal year, we would like to focus mainly on analysis of experimental data which have been conducted recently. We conducted several experiments on optical properties of eggshell in Terahertz Region (0.5-3.0 THz) to interpret biological phenomena in Chicken and also conducted experiment on Hatching eggs toward predicting gender and hatching time. Additionally, we may conduct the following additional experiments as supplementary experiments. Thus, we may need to purchase some consumable items, necessary accessories and others. Eggshell optical properties of various age and breed group of chickens using THz wave (reflectance and transmittance); SEM images of eggshell (various age and breed group);
Besides, we may need some funds to publish scientific articles/reports and attending conferences and associated travel cost in next fiscal year.
