Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which long-term refugees create economic activities and the impact these activities have on host societies. To this end, it compared the economic activities of refugees in mega camps and settlements in Asia and Africa. It examined how various factors, including state policies, the environment, history, culture, and time, influence the creation and development of these economic activities.
The findings of this research have two significant implications: ① They prompt a fundamental reconsideration of the conventional image of "dependent refugees," which has been the basis of traditional refugee support. ② They establish perspectives and methodologies focused on the social and cultural practices of people who create "places" imbued with meaning in time and space.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の対象地域では、難民をキャンプに隔離収容する政策をとっている。だが、難民キャンプとその周辺では、難民とホスト社会のあいだで活発な経済活動や社会関係が創出されている。こうした経済活動の背景を理解するためには、難民キャンプには国際社会からの支援が集まるというトランスナショナルな場所性も考慮する必要がある。
本研究の学術的意義は、難民キャンプという排除と包摂が重層するトランスナショナルな空間のなかで、難民とホスト社会の住民を中心とする諸アクターが、生活の場を創出するためにどのような相互行為をおこなっているのかに関する民族誌的な比較研究をおこなったことにある。
