Outline of Final Research Achievements

The lineage of defensive systems in basketball can be divided into three broad categories. The early defense was the “man-to-man defense”. By 1920, the “zone defense” was born. By the 1960s, the zone was derived from various formations. From the 1960s to 1970s, the “pressure defense,” which aggressively induces mistakes, became popular, as well as the combination defense, which combined man-to-man and zone. From the 1980s to the 1990s, tactics such as the drop against the pig-and-roll, show-and-recover, and bridge were also derived.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

バスケットボールにおけるディフェンスの発展はそれと相反するオフェンスとの関連性が深く、お互いが表裏の関係をを保ちながら発展してきている。特に、現在使われているディフェンスシステムの大半は、1970年代までにその基本形が出来上がっており、これらのシステムを中心的に解明することで、現在使用されている主なディフェンスの分析並びに新たな戦術の開発が可能となってくる。この点に本研究の学術的意義が見いだされる。また、本研究の成果は中学校からプロに至るディフェンス分析や新たな戦術開発の一助になるだけでなく、スポーツ戦術論の一領域として、ほかの球技種目にも応用可能な波及効果が得られる。
