Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first year of this project went mostly as planned. A well-known and reliable developer was contracted to program the online tool in conjunction with the PI’s design and timeline. The tool was often tested in classroom environments and routinely adjusted for improved functionality throughout the course of the academic year. In lieu of contracting a third-party host for installation, it was determined that the existing Moodle platform at the PI's institution would suffice, and funds allocated to this cost were diverted to items that will bolster research methods and data privacy and protection. The PI published a research summary outlining the trial project which informed the current research project, and delivered a well-attended presentation with the developer about the online tool.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Due to reasons including a family death and the global COVID-19 pandemic, the PI was unable to attend several academic conferences which had been budgeted for during the first year. However, these setbacks did not severely affect the timeline of the research project. In addition, the developer contracted was able to fulfill the first phase of the project as estimated, but due to increased workload as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, he has fallen slightly behind the original schedule for the second phase. The PI has been in contact with the developer and it is anticipated that the program will be fully operational by the time data collection begins.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Due to the current global COVID-19 pandemic, it is anticipated that the data collection phase of this research project will be delayed at least six months, but more probably one full year. Prioritizing public health and safety, the PI has decided against utilizing alternative data-collection environments. Instead, the PI will continue to collaborate with the developer to ensure that the tool is ready to implement when possible. In addition, the PI will continue developing research methods and analysis of published literature in the field so that the timeframe between data collection and the publication of research findings may be shortened.

Causes of Carryover |
Funds which were allocated to the cost of online hosting were determined unnecessary, and will be diverted to programming that will create a more user-friendly and robust application that is compatible on mobile devices. In addition, it has been determined that research assistants will be needed to analyze data once it has been collected. Finally, funds which were to be used for conferences that were not attended will be reserved for future conferences.
