Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to pandemic-related restrictions enforced at the research environment, the researcher was unable to collect data as planned during the second year of the project. The research project therefore continued in the development stage, with the researcher testing and refining the instrument with the developer. Methods for data collection and analysis were outlined for future implementation, when pandemic-related restrictions are lifted. The researcher was able to present the instrument that was developed for this project at a conference of Moodle developers, where it was awarded the top prize for Moodle Innovation in Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The instrument that was designed to collect data for this project was dependent on an environment in which subjects could speak with each other face-to-face using a computer to mediate the sequence of tasks in the experiment. For the academic year in which data was scheduled to be collected, the researcher's institution implemented pandemic-related safety protocols, which first prevented subjects from accessing the facilities, followed by a ban on face-to-face communicative tasks once subjects were allowed inside the facilities. These conditions prevented the researcher from collecting any meaningful data using the instrument during the second year of the project.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The instrument is fully operational and will be used to collect data during the third year of the research project. Pandemic-related restrictions on the research environment have been lifted for the time being, and the researcher will collect as much data as possible for as long as possible during this window. Simultaneously, the research project is moving forward with the originally proposed up-scaling of the instrument for wider access by developing an environment for other universities and educational institutions. Although the researcher intended to use results from the project to promote uptake in the wider community, demonstrations of the existing instrument are expected to achieve the same goal.
|
Causes of Carryover |
As the project has been severely affected by the pandemic, alternative methods have been deemed necessary to achieve the goals stated in the original proposal. Specifically, funds will be used to create onboarding materials for research subjects including users (students) and administrators (teachers) of the instrument. These onboarding materials will act to promote uptake and improve accurate use of the instrument on a wider scale. Funds will also be used in accordance with the original proposal for maintenance and development of the instrument, and for future conferences.
