Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This year I have managed to work on my research project via focusing on academic writing. I recently published a book chapter in Spanish about "Women voices in Japanese literature: Female body stories" in which I offered a survey of women writers and focused on the work of Ito Hiromi. I also published an interview with author Murata Sayaka and translator Ginny Tapley Takemori. And even though I could not present in Boston I worked on exploring empathy in the works of Kirino Natsuo and Murata Sayaka. Also, I have made progress with three academic articles, one on Kirino Natsuo's Goddess Chronicle, the other one of Kirino Natsuo's Tokyo Island, and the last one is on Kawakami Mieko's Breasts and Eggs.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

In terms of research and publishing articles I have made good progress, this is really the first time in my academic career that I have had the support to focus on my publications. In addition to the book chapter and event report, I have three academic articles coming up,if I pass the last screening, two in English and one in Japanese. Due to the coronavirus I was not able to present in an academic conference in Boston as planned and I am also not able to have full access to libraries and materials I need for my research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

- Continue revising articles for publication
- Write and submit a book chapter for an anthology of mothering by September 2020
- Work on a literary translation of Kawakami Mieko's story for Granta Spain
- Plan literary event with Kawakami Mieko and her translators at ICU (due to the coronavirus, this may be postponed)
- Eventually, work on my book proposal

Causes of Carryover

I will add the remaining budget 5,390yen to purchase research materials together with the next year's budget. I was waiting for some novel articles and books that will be published this year.
