Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examines representations of Galicia, an Austrian possession of the Habsburg Empire from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. In particular, the depictions of Eastern Jewish immigrants to the United States in the novel "Hiob" (1930) by the German-Jewish writer Josef Roth, who was born in Galicia, and of the multiethnic and multilingual city of Lemberg(Lviv) in his essay "Reise durch Galicia" (1924) show the poverty of peasants and Jews in the peripheral regions and the accompanying immigration to America. The accompanying American immigration, as well as the exuberant nationalism and the writer's desire to find linguistic, ethnic, and religious diversity as a remnant of the Habsburg multicultural period, even after the disappearance of Galicia, were evident.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

2022年春のロシアによるウクライナへの侵攻以降、ウクライナは世界にふたたび注視されているが、その実態は日本だけでなく欧州のオーストリアでもあまり知られていない。オーストリア領ガリツィアにかんする本研究（とくにヨーゼフ・ロートの『ガリツィアへの旅』の分析）は、ウクライナ西部の言語的・民族的・宗教的な錯綜が常態である現状を、戦間期のテクストから逆照射した。ロシアとは異なるアイデンティティを求めて西欧への帰属を志向するウクライナ西部の現状を、たんに政治的・社会的のみならず、文化的・情緒的な側面から考えるうえでもロートにかんする本研究には社会的意義がある。
