Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study attempts to analyze historically and comprehensively how the British World as a sphere of influence has changed into the modern Commonwealth, by focusing on the multilayered relationship and intensity of (1) emotional ties of Britishness based on commonality of blood, language, and religion, (2) economic ties related to trade, finance, and production structures, and (3) military ties through arms transfers and military aid.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ブレグジット以後のイギリスはグローバル・ブリテン構想を掲げ、かつての自治植民地であったカナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドとの紐帯を強化し、アメリカ合衆国との安全保障上の紐帯を強めながら、インド太平洋地域への関与を強めている。本研究の意義は、こうしたブリティッシュ・ワールドを支える紐帯がどの程度の強度を持ち、帝国主義といかなる関係を保ちながら歴史的に形成されてきたのかを総合的に解明できる点にある。
