Outline of Final Research Achievements

A literature survey of more than 1.2 million place names of koaza, a subsection of a town or a village, in eastern Japan confirmed forty-seven place names called Kariyado, and revealed that they are distributed on the Pacific side. In addition, a detailed field survey of place names called Kariyado in the eastern Kanto region revealed that they are located near rivers but at higher elevations that are relatively less affected by floods, and that they are located at river crossing points of medieval arterial roads. Considering the research results to date, this study has revealed that place name called Kariyado is one of the effective materials for the restoration of roads and understanding of landscapes in medieval Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

地名は、その解釈がしばしば恣意的となるため、これまで歴史研究においてあまり有効な資料として取り扱われることはなかった。しかし、文献資料などの常用の資料に比べて、地名は各地に遍在しているため、確実な歴史資料として利用できるようになれば、歴史の研究視角が広がり、また身近な資料として地域の歴史文化の研究と理解の促進に寄与することができる。本研究では、その一例としてこれまで注目されることのなかったカリヤドという地名をとりあげて、東日本一帯における分布調査と関東地方東部における詳細な現地調査によってその有効性を実証し、確かな歴史資料としての地名を新たに提案した。
