Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This research aims at clarifying the role of the material culture of disaster in the knowledge and perception of the local environment and in
relation to risk awareness and resilience. The focus is specifically on water-related disaster and the approach multi-sited (Japan and France).
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many aspects of the project couldn’t proceed as originally planned. However, building on last year's work, a tentative framework for the assessment of human/object interaction for disaster-related objects has been devised and crucial work in integrating the concept of "sustainable disaster memory" as a tool for risk awareness.
One paper was published, one conference paper conducted and interdisciplinary collaborations have started.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project couldn’t proceed as originally planned. Most fieldwork had to be cancelled, leading to significant changes in plans and actions.
While previous fieldwork in Japan has allowed the gathering of some data, the Covid-19 pandemic has made fieldwork in France extremely difficult, and impossible for most of the year.
The conceptual framework for the project has however developed significantly, bringing together key elements of memory-related research and material culture studies. The ideas of "memorialization of disaster" as well as "patrimonialization of disaster" have also been explored and will keep playing an important part in the further development of the project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The objectives for AY2022 are as follows:
1) conduct fieldwork in France. This is the most pressing matter and will again depend on the pandemic situation.
2) conduct interviews with local stakeholder regarding their perception of the local “risk culture”
3) keep on refining the theoretical framework, bringing together historical data, material culture-related data and the literature on disaster memory.
If conducting fieldwork remains difficult, a heavier focus will be placed on 1) exploring historical archives on disaster and the related material culture, 2) analyzing the content of the French collaborative database of flood markers as well as the flood-related content of the Japanese GSI database.

Causes of Carryover

The reason for incurring amount to be used in the next fiscal year is the Covid Pandemic, that has prevented most fieldwork. The plan is to use this budget to conduct fieldwork as well as to buy the appropriate literature related to the field of research.
