Outline of Final Research Achievements

The senescence accompanied by yellowing phenomenon induced in the dark on Physcomitrium patens colonies is analyzed. Intracellular H2O2 levels increased in the dark. Treatment with Trolox, an ROS scavenger, suppressed the increase in H2O2 levels and inhibited senescence. When colonies were treated with the ROS generator methylviologen, intracellular H2O2 levels increased, and colonies became yellowish. These results indicate that the increase in intracellular H2O2 levels is mediated between dark stress and senescence response (Roni et al. 2022). Yellowing was delayed when colonies were heat-treated before being placed in the dark. These results suggest that heat stress delays plant senescence.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
