| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Important progress occurred in field research conducted in areas struck by the 2011 tsunami, which narrowed the project's focus from post-disaster behaviors in general to specifically focus on the Japanese practice of 災害伝承 following disasters. Hypotheses have been refined, focusing on the effects of memorials on sense of risk and security (mediated by emotion), to be tested this year. A collaboration was struck with a photojournalist who has covered the tsunami reconstruction since 2012, and has provided photos to use as ecologically valid stimuli to test hypotheses regarding disaster memorials. This conceptual shift is expected to make the research results more applicable to real-world contexts by showing how post-disaster memorials can protect communities from disaster.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Because of a shift in the project to focus on 災害伝承, the experimental test design must be revised. I anticipate beginning experimental studies in August.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This summer, experimental stimuli testing the effect of disaster memorials (vs reconstruction infrastructure) on psychological perceptions of risk and security (both environmental and autonomous). Possible community outreach using 災害伝承 to warn locals of local hazards via previous disasters are being considered. Potential mediating effects of fear and horror will also be examined. I plan to submit the results for the Affective Sciences conference in the US, as well as a peer-review journal.

The full amount was not spent because of delays in the research progress. I plan to spend the remainder next year (FY2023) on experiments and a conference presentation.
