Research Abstract |
My original research plan was to study the influence of Classical literature on contemporary Irish poetry and drama. Due to the significant amount of Classical material that Irish poets and dramatists had translated and adapted, I believed this would be a rewarding area of investigation which would expand critical understanding of both contemporary Irish and Classical works. As a result of research trips to universities in England, Northern Ireland and Japan in the first year of the project, I revised the aims and scope of the project, because it became clear that the drama aspect of the project had already been substantially covered by other researchers ; it seemed a more productive aim to focus on the influence of Classical material on contemporary Irish and British poetry, since the two are frequently cross-fertilising. I made presentations at international conferences in Finland, Sweden, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, and published articles in leading peer-reviewed journals. The major outcome of the research, a monograph entitled Pastoral Elegy in Contemporary British and Irish Poetry, was published in the UK in March 2012 ; it is due to be published in the USA in May 2012.
