Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This project has been investigating the merits of making videos as an educational tool. As a result, it has produced over 40 publicly available educational/edutainment videos, with a total of 2000 views and nearly 180 hours of watch time.
The channel has attracted nearly 700 subscribers from around the world from countries including America, the UK, India and the Philippines. The analytics are being compiled for publication, but so far, the project has found that students are typically more interested in detailed 'how to' videos, though edutainment content can attract subscribers. The next stage is to publish detailed courses on organic chemistry and thermodynamics with a view to establishing the demand for course-directed content versus quick show-and-tell type videos.
We have also produced a new methodology for turning online crystallographic data into 3D animations via Blender 3D modelling software. We are currently modifying python scripts to better visualise atomic and molecular orbitals.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The YouTube channel is building at an exponential rate but is still in the launch phase. This growth is as expected for complex, high quality content with a small budget. Many lessons have been learned over the course of this project and this final year is expected to yield good results.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The next phase of the work is to make the channel truly international by inviting international students to present foreign language versions of the English-language videos I've already made. We will investigate how this promotes engagement and learning opportunities around the world.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The next stage of this programme will require various computer software products (film editing, picture editing, animating, illustrating, 3D animating) as well as service software (translation). It will also require at least one more work station (computer plus monitor) for editing work and may require a new camera. New portable microphones will also be required.
