Research Abstract |
Focusing on the coastal ecosystems in Southeast Asia, which is a biodiversity hotspot under the threats of human activities and climate change, this study aimed at expanding our quantitative knowledge on zooplankton. On the basis of taxonomic, molecular-genetic, and ecological analyses of existing materials, we discovered and described ca. 20 species of copepods so far unknown, and demonstrated presence of genetically-differentiated cryptic species within several known species. We also digitized quantitative data of zooplankton distribution from ca. 16,000 data points by analyses/mining of existing samples/papers. As for chaetognaths, we compiled the distributional patterns of species diversity in the Indo-Pacific Region, and established/published a model to predict species diversity (species richness and diversity) from environmental parameters.
