Research Abstract |
To improve bioanode performance in microbial fuel cells, humic materials and oxidized metals as catalysts were investigated. The carbon-cloth anode containing tungsten showed a twofold increase in the power output, as compared to an anode without catalyst. The power output of the carbon-cloth anode containing humic materials was comparable with that of the anode without catalyst. A Nafion solution as the binder for bioanode catalyst was effective against tungsten, while it was not effective against humic materials. Further developments of anode catalyst using humic materials are required.
