Outline of Final Research Achievements

We conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis among approximately 3,750 incident cancer cases and 13,000 subcohort participants in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study (JPHC Study) to investigate an association between diabetes mellitus and cancer incidence. Using 29 single nucleotide polymorphisms as instrumental variables, the MR analysis indicated no association between diabetes and cancer. In site-specific analyses, no associations were found for pancreatic, liver, or colorectal cancer. Our findings suggest that diabetes per se may not be a true risk factor for cancer.
