Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aimed to clarify the genetic diversities and population connectivities of blooming jellyfish which were commercially harvested in Southeast Asia. In addition, information on the early life histories and symbionts of those jellyfish are obtained, and the mechanism of the bloom and the lifecycle strategy supporting the bloom are discussed. A clear difference in the genetic connectivities between local populations were recognized between two dominant jellyfish species, suggesting the mechanism of forming bloom may be different in those species. In some blooming species, a previously-unknown asexual reproduction was observed, and this may be adaptive to their habitat. Those blooming jellyfish in the Southeast Asia are considered important as hosts of various symbiotic organisms.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
東南アジアでは食用クラゲ類が広範囲で大量に出現し、産業上も重要であるにもかかわらず、それらに対する研究は限られた状態であり、本研究によりこれらクラゲ類の集団遺伝構造、個体群間の交流(連結性)、生活史戦略の一端が初めて明らかになった。本研究で明らかになった遺伝的多様性の結果から、特に地域ごとの遺伝的独自性が高いミノクラゲについては、各地域での資源管理が必要である可能性が考えらる。また、クラゲ類の共生生物の詳細が明らかになり、漁業によりそれらも死滅することから、生態系保全の点から注意を要すると考えられる。これらクラゲ類数種の飼育に成功したことにより、水族館での展示や今後の室内研究に貢献出来る。
