Outline of Final Research Achievements

I did research in phonetics and grammar of the 5 dialects of modern Basque, spoken in Azkoitia, Azpeitia, Zarautz, Zestoa and Zumaia in Gipuzkoa province of the Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. In each dialect, I got the data of two native speakers of two generations ; the elder ones are over 50 year old and the younger ones are between 22 and 25 years old. The dialects in Azpeitia and Azkoitia are quite different from the standard Basque, and other three dialects have many characteristics in commom with the standard Basque. As for phonetical phenomena, there is a few differences between the elder gereneration and the younger one in every dialect. As for grammatical phenomena, in some special structures there are some remarkable differences between the two generations in every dialect.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現代バスク語は，そもそも地域変種が多いことで知られるが，２言語併用社会に見られるファクター，標準語の普及などにより変容を続けている．その変容の様子を，地域ごとの違いという観点からだけでなく，「世代ごとの違い」と言う視点も加え，音韻と文法について「地域差」と「世代差」の２方向から調べて記述し，その変容の要因を探ることは，現代バスク語の全体像に迫るための研究の一部として，記述言語学としても社会言語学的に意義があると考える.
