Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research aims to investigate trilateral relations among the United States, China (People’s Republic of China) and Taiwan (Republic of China) during the two Taiwan Strait Crises in the 1950s. It utilizes not only U.S. sources but also the Chinese and Taiwanese archival documents that have been declassified recently in China and Taiwan. By doing so, this research re-examines the development of Sino-U.S.relations and the transformation of regional dynamics in East Asia during the period.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

米国政府は、台湾と断交後、台湾関係法によって台湾への武器供与を通じた安全保障上のコミットメントを続けてきている。このような状況はいまなお続いており、「台湾有事」をいかに回避するかという政策的課題は、国際社会はもとより、日本にとって重要な問題である。その意味においても、台湾海峡危機は単なる歴史的事象として捉えられるべきではなく、抑止力が相互に作用して直接的軍事衝突が回避されたという事実からすれば、中国と台湾の紛争のエスカレーション回避のための歴史的教訓として、米中・米台・中台関係に関わる現代的インプリケーションをも有している。本研究は、そのような意味においても学術的かつ社会的意義を有している。
