Research Abstract |
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by diminished upper airway muscle phasic and tonic activation during sleep. Recently, OSA patients show aberrant responses in multiple brain areas, perhaps as a consequence of previously-demonstrated gray matter loss within the frontal cortex, anterior cingulate. In this study, we studied the characteristics of the response of frontal area during breath holding conditions by using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and pulse oxymeter in healthy volunteers, and evaluated the impaired cognitive functions in medication-free OSA and control subjects. Average heart rate increased during the breath holding in control subjects and MR signal intensities decreased in frontal lobe. WCST performance exhibited the distinct cognitive impairment in the moderate grade-OSA-patients.
