Outline of Final Research Achievements |
It is reported that Lidocaine (LID) inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and EGFR inhibitors have a radiosensitizing effect. To study about a radiosensitizing effect of LID in dogs with tumors undergoing radiation therapy, two canine malignant melanoma cell lines, LMeC (high expression of EGFR) and KMeC (low expression of EGFR), were used. LID had cytotoxic effect at high concentrations in both strains. Proliferative capacity was reduced in a LID concentration-dependent manner, especially in LMeC. But, in the non-irradiated condition, the proliferative capacity was once more increased at low LID concentrations. These results suggest that LID may have a radiosensitizing effect, however, depending on the conditions, LID could potentially protect tumor cells. Further study is needed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
