Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this research is to consider the effectiveness of the practical application of universal pictograms that can assist a self-reliant life and improve social participation and safety for not only visually impaired people but also others. We conducted experiments to confirm the “Evaluation of visibility” and the “Gap between tactile and visual perception” of pictograms. From these results, we were able to successfully sample the size differences between visual and tactile modalities.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

晴眼者だけではなく、本来、視覚サインを活用できない視覚障害者にも利用できるピクトグラムが実用化され、その制作ガイドラインが整えば、今後増加するであろう点字や触知図等の知識が不十分な中途視覚障害者の外出する機会や生活圏の拡大に貢献できる。同時に各自治体や諸施設等での利用や小中学校等の教育機関での活用が進むことで、ユニバーサル・デザインの展開、福祉教育にも大いに貢献できる。また当該ピクトグラムの実用化は、日本語の理解が難しい外国人等の利用者への用途や災害時に電気設備が使用できない状況において安全・災害対策にも寄与できる。
