Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study clarified how a kind of kinship named “nirin” is created in the daily lives of people in the Spiti Valley, and how they are/become related to each other as nirin. Through this examination, this study made clear that kinship such as nirin has an important role in Spiti although it has not been payed academic attention for a long time. The distinction between kinship and non-kinship, as it has been supposed in previous kinship studies of Tibetan people, should be recognized not as inherently given but as appearing depending on situations and relations. It is necessary to focus on this kind of flexible kinship in Tibetan studies. This study also reconsiders substance theory in anthropological studies on kinship. While these studies focus on transactions between people, this study pointed out that people’s behavior cannot be reduced to transactions of substances. These research results were presented in the internal and the international conferences and the journal article.
