Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
This study examined the interplay between traditional authority and modern state systems in contemporary Africa, focusing on pastoralist community. It critically re-examined how leadership forms created in colonial time have been reactivated amid post-Cold War democratization, challenging earlier portrayals of pastoral leaders as either marginal or as quasi-state actors. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this research explored how internal divisions in pastoral society are created, promoted and reproduced, emphasizing the role of cosmological framework in shaping authority. It showed how agency, power, and belonging are embedded in ancestral and environmental relations. By analyzing political legitimacy and fairness in non-centralized society, this study offered new insights into how tradition and modernity are negotiated in African governance landscape.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
