Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research makes a comparative analysis of recent Japanese and U.S. newspaper political cartoons and elaborates the main similarities and differences. By collecting over 14,000 newspaper political cartoons from between 2001 and 2012 made into a database, and by then focusing of cartoons related to disasters, the study makes clear the that Japanese newspaper political cartoons are fewer in number, simpler in design, much more limited in the targets for their satire, and their satire is also comparatively weak. In addition the study compares national Japanese newspaper political cartoons to those found in other media in Japan, and these comparisons it makes clear the cultural, formal and practical reasons for the limited satire in Japanese newspaper political cartoons.
