Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the survey for this study, it was found that oral tests are rarely administered in the native language during school education in China, Korea, and Japan. In order to investigate the effect of this educational background on the monologue task of high-stakes English speaking tests, we examined cognitive processes during task performance in the native language (L1) and English (L2). Japanese subjects rated themselves lower than Chinese and Korean subjects in both their L1 and L2 on 5 items in a post-test questionnaire for which statistically significant differences were found (p < 0.05) between countries of origin. In addition, the responses of all subjects to a further 5 items related to both the planning and speaking phases of the task, suggested that the language processing required was demanding even in the L1.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
