Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this research project was to analyze how Euro-Ottoman treaty relations developed historically based on original sources, both Ottoman and European. Thus, gathering original sources was vital. This 5-year project enabled the research on such sources in the archives and libraries of Turkey, England, and France. Based on these original documents, this project attempted to place the Ottoman experience and elucidate its meaning in the context of the history of international law or of international relations. By doing so, it further sought to provide data to fathom the relationships between European and non-European states as a whole, and more specifically, its impact on the unequal commercial treaty system that covered East Asia.
